Acute Disease

What is an Acute Disease?

Acute diseases, such as the influenza virus, gastroenteritis (the "stomach bug"), and the common cold, come on suddenly but usually go away in a day or two. These diseases can produce annoying symptoms, such as a runny nose, or they may cause more serious, life-threatening issues.

When Should I See My Family Physician?

When new symptoms occur, and if you are unsure what to do, call your family doctor for guidance. Some infections require rest, fluids and time to clear by themselves. Other conditions may require testing or medication, such as antibiotics, to resolve.

  • Fever, especially persistent fever over 101 degrees
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore throat lasting more than 3 days
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Severe pain

Some acute diseases require immediate medical attention. If you think you may need urgent care, please call our office for guidance. If you have a medical emergency, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Nothing is more important than your health, and your family physician is here to make sure that all your loved ones get the care they need!
